Kathryn Ireland in the Houston Chronicle

October 10, 2011

Houston Chronicle recently did an interview with our client, Kathryn Ireland, who offered tips from affordable, fast design to quick last-minute prep before guests arrive at your home. Kathryn, this week, will be giving the keynote speech at the kickoff luncheon for Houston Market Week. Read the entire article below.

For more than 20 years, A-list interior and textile designer Kathryn M. Ireland has toiled over the renovation of La Castellane, her summer house in France. The fruits of the British-born designer’s labor of love are chronicled in her new scrapbook-style, tip-infused book, Summers in France ($35, Gibbs Smith, 224 pages).

Many know Ireland from Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators In the book, she invites readers to join an ever-changing cast of family and friends to frolic at her estate near Toulouse. The designer, who works even when on holiday at her vacation house and 24/6 from September to early June, answered questions via email. (Her answers were edited for brevity.)

“The improvisation of our summers there is what I wanted to try and communicate,” Ireland explains. “Many friends over the years have contributed to the magic there. The book is a story of the journey of the house. It’s also food, decorating and local travel in a region of France that is not very familiar to most people, even the French themselves. … Ironically, my chaotic summers have brought me peace of mind (and) allowed me to grow and maintain my sanity.”

Q: Your specialty is affordable fast design. What are your top five tips?

A: Toss inexpensive but colorful and attractive throws over chairs, sofas and beds.

Take old wine or tequila bottles and place a colorful flower in each. You need at least five bottles per grouping.

Frame your kids’ [and] friends’ artwork.

Make new lampshades out of vintage or a favorite textile. It requires very little yardage and most lamp establishments will do it or recommend a lampshade maker.

My motto? A splash of red in every room. It can be a pillow, a painting with red, an accent vase or bowl, whatever. A little red goes a long way.

Q: What do you do for a quick last-minute prep before guests arrive?

A: Here’s my checklist: Flowers in the guest bedroom, fresh towels, new soaps and clean linens. First impressions are important, so the front door and entryway area need to be clear and organized. Since my house funnels into the kitchen from every direction, I pick up odd plates and glasses lying around, and if someone arrives just after lunch, I make sure that even the mess is somewhat tidy.

Q: What design mistake do people often make when they’re trying to save money?

A: I think most people try too hard or are too self-consciously “decorating.” Some people like living hotel-style, with minimal clutter and no personal belongings in evidence, but I don’t. Hotels are great getaways, but a home has to be personal, soulful and most importantly, a reflection of who you are.
